Eight and easy for Spain

Spain were in cruise control for the entirety of their clash with Liechtenstein as Alvaro Morata and Iago Aspas helped themselves to braces each.

Julen Lopetegui switched to three at the back against the minnows, whose last victory in a World Cup qualifier came some 11 years ago, when they beat Luxembourg 3-0.

Sergio Ramos needed just two minutes to fire the visitors ahead, heading in David Silva’s free kick.

Isco then had a curler from just inside the Liechtenstein box parried away by Peter Jehle, but two goals in two minutes from La Roja saw Alvaro Morata nod in a corner, before the goalkeeper’s air-kick gifted the midfielder an open goal.

Morata should have had a second goal, when he knocked in Silva’s cross with his header, but the linesman raised his flag, despite the striker being level.

Another chance went begging for the Chelsea man as Isco’s cross-shot from the right missed the top of his boot in the Liechtenstein box by a whisker.

Nonetheless, Silva delightfully flighted home a free kick from around 25 yards out, although David de Gea’s poor backpass straight after the resulting kick-off almost gifted the hosts a shock consolation prize.

Aspas came on as a substitute for Spain in the second half, and he got off the mark in next to no time with a header from close range.

The Celta Vigo striker proceeded to thread through Morata, who poked the ball past Jehle for 6-0, before forcing the principality’s record appearance holder into pushing away his diving header.

Moments after Gerard Deulofeu’s shot was saved by Jehle at his near post, having stepover-ed his way into the area, Aspas fired home from a couple of yards out, with 25 minutes of the match still remaining.

Nacho Fernandez nearly nodded in Spain’s eighth goal, but he sent his header wide, while an unmarked Nacho Monreal was similarly unable to keep his effort down.

Jehle again denied Morata of his hat-trick, keeping out his near-post drive, but he could little about Deulofeu’s shot, which was deflected in by Maximilian Goppel.

The only disappointment for Spain on the night was Sergio Busquets’s yellow card, which ruled him out of his country’s next qualifier against Albania,.
