Villa: Injury at worst possible time

David Villa has lamented sustaining an adductor injury ‘at the worst possible day’ causing him to withdraw from the Spanish national squad.

The 35-year-old striker was called up to the international setup for the first time since the 2014 World Cup for this month’s World Cup qualification games against Italy and Liechtenstein.

“The injury arrived at the worst possible time, as these were really happy days and I was really enjoying myself,” Villa is quoted as saying by Marca.

The New York City was recalled to the national team after bagging 19 goals and providing nine assists for his side in the current MLS season, and made a cameo appearance against Italy on Saturday.

The former Valencia and Barcelona striker remains on 98 caps for his country, and is La Roja’s all-time record scorer with 59 strikes.
