Inter eye Atleti’s Gimenez

Inter are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez, who is out of contract next summer, in the January transfer window.

The Nerazzurri reportedly failed in late moves for English-based central defenders Shkodran Mustafi and Eliaquim Mangala, both formerly of Valencia, this summer.

Italian outlet Tuttosport reported on Tuesday that the Milanese giants are prioritising strengthening the position in the New Year and have placed Atleti’s Uruguayan defender top of the list.

Gimenez’s release clause is set at €65m but at the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer, it is likely Los Rojiblancos would accept a cut-price deal.

The 22-year-old is reportedly open to a move away from Atleti due to lack of playing time – he started only 12 La Liga fixtures last season and is behind Diego Godin and Stefan Savic in Diego Simeone’s pecking order.
