Barca: Neymar departure our opportunity

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has called for optimism from the club’s fans in the wake of the summer transfer window.

Bartomeu and his board are facing a vote of no-confidence after a chaotic summer which saw Neymar leave for Paris Saint-Germain and a list of transfer targets not signed.

“The situation distracted us too much,” Bartomeu told an interview with Diario Sport.

“I would have preferred them to tell us before we're leaving’ as we would then have looked for a replacement in the market – the way of going about it wasn't right.

“We don't stop players leaving and that is the same with Neymar, but we would have preferred to have signed (Ousmane) Dembele in a better market.

“You can't be overly pessimistic, we see this as an opportunity for Barcelona to break the trident and to better our collective play.

“This is a chance to return to collective football in our midfield, which is traditionally the club’s strength.

“It's an opportunity…we have a new Coach, a new project. We can't be pessimists. Let's stop being pessimistic!”
