Chelsea leave Costa out of CL squad

Diego Costa has been left out of Chelsea’s Champions League squad after a summer in which he failed to get his desired Atletico Madrid return.

Costa was told by Chelsea Coach Antonio Conte that his services were not required for the 2017-18 season and was strongly linked with a move back to Atletico, despite the Madrid club’s transfer embargo that runs until January 2018.

The move never materialised, however, and though Chelsea included the Spain international in their Premier League squad, there is no place for Costa in the European roster.

It had been suggested that Costa would be named in both squads but now will not be eligible to turn out for the Premier League champions in European competition before 2018.

He would be eligible to play for Atletico in the Champions League should he return to the club in the January transfer window and Atletico qualify from Group C, having been drawn against Qarabag, Roma and Chelsea.
