Villarreal eye PSG’s Areola

Villarreal are considering a move for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola due to long-term injuries to Sergio Asenjo and Andres Fernandez.

Asenjo suffered an ACL knee ligament injury in February and his replacement Fernandez suffered a similar injury in Friday’s defeat at Real Sociedad, although its extent is not yet known.

Marca report the Yellow Submarine are now keen on finding a reinforcement with Areola being eyed up, although such a move would be ‘highly complicated’.

The 24-year-old spent the 2015/16 campaign at El Madrigal but is now establishing himself as number one in Unai Emery’s side ahead of Kevin Trapp, so an exit seems unlikely.

Mariano Barbosa is now the only fit goalkeeper for Fran Escriba’s side which represents a major area of concern, although any permanent signing appears unlikely due to the faith the club reportedly has in Asenjo and Fernandez returning to form.
