Del Bosque: I believed in Villar

Former Spain boss Vicente del Bosque admits he believed in the honesty of disgraced RFEF President Angel Maria Villar. “I stuck my neck out for him.”

Villar was arrested on corruption charges last week and has since resigned from his positions at FIFA and UEFA, and Del Bosque confessed he was “worried” by the tense situation that Spanish football’s governing body found itself in.

“Villar? I stuck my neck out for him,” he told Cadena COPE.

“I hope nothing happens and that everything is resolved in the best way possible, for the good of football and those that are allegedly involved, but some have already been charged with lynching.

“I’m worried about the situation of the Federation and it fills me with sorrow.

“I don’t like being in this situation, but I believe, until proven otherwise, in the goodwill of the people.

“Neymar? We’re going very quickly in terms of finances for signings. It’s become rampant.

“We should find a way to put a stop to it all, but it’s a free market and anyone can do whatever they like with their money.

“Valverde? There’s a desire to do better than last season at Barca and their hopes have been replenished with a new Coach.

“La Masia? Barcelona have been on a decline in terms of their cantera’s contributions.

“Real Madrid? They have a great squad and arrive with the optimism of last season.”

Spain won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 under Del Bosque, but the 66-year-old stepped down after La Roja exited Euro 2016 from the last 16.
