Mourinho: Real Madrid closed De Gea door

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hinted Real Madrid ‘closed the door’ on goalkeeper David De Gea.

De Gea has in the past been close to moving to Santiago Bernabeu but when asked about the Spain international at a Press conference prior to a friendly between the Red Devils and Los Blancos, Mourinho insisted he was staying put.

“For a long time the door was closed, but we opened it because it isn’t good to have players who want to leave. We opened the door and they decided to close it. He’s very happy,” the Portuguese acknowledged, AS reports, with the ‘they’ believed to be Madrid.

Mourinho was also asked about the prospect of facing Champions League winners Madrid, who United, the Europa League winners, will meet in the European Super Cup in early August.

“I don’t know that it’s a great test. I’d say it would be a great experience. I don’t see it as a problem playing them now. The motivation isn’t the same and the circumstances are totally different,” he argued.

“It’s good for some of my players who haven’t yet measured themselves against teams like this. I imagine it’ll be a great experience for them.”
