Defender Jeremy Mathieu has joined Sporting Lisbon on a two-year deal after his contract was cancelled by Barcelona, it has been confirmed.
The French defender made 91 appearances for the Blaugrana after joining from Valencia in 2014 for €20m but has been deemed surplus to requirements by new Coach Ernesto Valverde.
The 33-year-old’s release clause at Estadio Jose Alvalade will be set at €60m and the move comes a week after Barca confirmed he had been allowed to train with the Portuguese giants.
Mathieu made just 16 appearances for the Catalans last season after suffering injury problems and will join Fabio Coentrao – who has left Real Madrid on loan – at Sporting.
