Cadiz take playoff advantage

A stunning goal from Ager Aketxe gave Cadiz a narrow advantage over Tenerife at the halfway point in their promotion playoff tie.

The hosts dominated the match with ten efforts on goal and the lion’s share of possession, with the visitors unable to trouble Cadiz goalkeeper Alberto Cifuentes throughout the game.

Aketxe – a Spanish youth international on loan from Athletic Bilbao – broke the deadlock in stunning fashion just after the hour mark with a pinpoint strike from range.

25,000 home fans crammed into the Estadio Ramon Carranza to see their side continue to push for a second goal which was not forthcoming to leave the tie in the balance ahead of Sunday’s return leg.

Cadiz only returned to the second tier last summer after a seven-year absence and have not competed in La Liga since 2006, while Tenerife were last in the top flight in 2010.

The other playoff semi-final first leg saw Getafe throw away a two-goal lead at Huesca to draw 2-2.
