Torres double in Calderon send off

A Fernando Torres double ignited the party celebrations for Atletico Madrid in their final ever match at the Vicente Calderon with a victory over Athletic Bilbao.

It was a fitting occasion and send-off for Atleti’s legendary home with an iconic club striker netting twice inside the opening eleven minutes to put them firmly on course for victory in a stadium which was already electric.

Inaki Williams pulled one back for Athletic Club twenty minutes from time to temporarily add some nerves to the occasion but Angel Correa’s goal a minute from time allowed the hosts to start their party.

Whilst Diego Simeone’s men had already been assured of third place, the defeat had big implications for Athletic who miss out on European football by one point and one place to Basque rivals Real Sociedad.

Whilst the Argentine Coach committed his future to Los Rojiblancos after the match, Athletic Club Coach Ernesto Valverde could well be off to Barcelona in a week.
