Barca to hold Wembley tribute

Barcelona have announced that they will hold a tribute for their 1992 European Cup winners on June 10.

Saturday marked 25 years since Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’ beat Sampdoria 1-0 at Wembley Stadium for Barca’s first-ever European Cup.

The tribute is scheduled for 21:00 UK time and will be split into three parts – a reception for the players involved in the triumph, a seven-a-side match between them and a selection of legends and a show to round off the evening.

“We started our tribute for Wembley with the kit for this season, then with the match against Sampdoria in the Gamper Trophy,” added Vice-President Jordi Cardoner in his announcement.

“We’ve also run other initiatives, such as the membership card and the creation of ‘Espai Wembley’ in our museum, to pay tribute to a historic team.”

President Josep Maria Bartomeu added: “It’s been 25 years and it only seems like yesterday.

“There are few events in the world that remain in time and memory like this. All ‘barcelonistas’ are children of that moment.

“With that goal, we buried the wave of pessimism that had plagued ‘barcelonismo’ forever and it took us towards becoming the most popular sporting entity on a world level.

“Never had a win marked our fate like this one.”

Among those joining the board members at the presentation were then-midfielder Jose Mari Bakero, Cruyff’s son-in-law, Jesus Mariano Angoy, and former President Josep Lluis Nunez.
