Celta Vigo have announced that Coach Eduardo Berizzo will step down once his contract expires on June 30.
Berizzo claimed last weekend that he would stay on at Celta if he was able to make “important reinforcements”, but it appears his demands have not been met by the Galicians, while he has been heavily linked with the imminent vacancy at Sevilla.
“Eduardo Berizzo and his coaching staff will not continue at Real Club Celta next season,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“It concludes a wonderful three-year period of continuous growth in sporting, social and institutional aspects.
“These have been three magnificent seasons in which a dream has always been pursued, three seasons that did not only fuel enthusiasm and hope but were also anchored in the soul of ‘celtismo’.
“These have been three years under a Coach who has made history and will forever be in the memory of the club and their fans.
“Eduardo Berizzo had left a remarkable imprint on the club as a player, and he now leaves another, deeper, one as a Coach. He is undoubtedly one of the best in the history of Real Club Celta.
“The club can only show gratitude for his commitment, involvement and passion that marked his work here, and for the most brilliant [work] in terms of playing style and achievements, which are unsurpassed.
“Thank-you to a Coach who believed in this project, moulded it and executed it with a personal seal that fit perfectly into ‘celtismo’. Thank you very much, Toto.”
A former Celta midfielder, Berizzo succeeded Luis Enrique in the summer of 2014 and led the side to eighth and sixth in his first two campaigns.
The 47-year-old then made history as he took the Vigo club to a European semi-final for the first time ever via a last-four place in the Europa League, but they lost to Manchester United over two legs.
