Mascherano thigh injury confirmed

Barcelona have confirmed Javier Mascherano missed Sunday’s win at Las Palmas with a thigh injury but did not reveal the extent of his injury.

The Argentine was originally named in Luis Enrique’s starting XI in Las Palmas but a late change to the teamsheet, twenty minutes before kick-off, saw him replaced by debutant Marlon Santos.

"Tests carried out on Monday confirm that Mascherano has a slight injury to his right thigh," a statement from the Catalan club said.

"His recovery will dictate when he can return."

Gerard Pique (virus) and Sergi Roberto (suspension) will return to the Blaugrana’s backline against Eibar on Sunday but Jeremy Mathieu and Aleix Vidal will miss the game.

Marlon, on loan from Fluminese, is expected to join Barca permanently for €5.5m this summer and said after his debut: "I was a bit nervous at the start, I could feel it in my stomach, but I managed to control my emotions.

"I had to give my best. I work hard all week for chances like this and I think I was ready. It was a unique opportunity."
