Wk 37: Valencia top, Granada flop

Valencia edged past Espanyol in Saturday’s Week 37 action, but there wasn’t such respite for Tony Adams, whose Granada suffered a seventh straight defeat.

Espanyol 0-1 Valencia

Valencia made it back-to-back wins on Saturday as they narrowly got the better of Espanyol in a 1-0 victory at Cornella-El Prat.

Espanyol’s top goalscorer, Gerard Moreno, had an early shot from close range saved by Jaume Domenech, before Marc Navarro sent a free header over.

Not for the first time, poor finishing was to be the Catalans’ Achilles heel as Los Che hit back through Simone Zaza, who smacked over from a few yards out.

Jaume did have to parry Jose Manuel Jurado’s half-volley and pray that Felipe Caicedo’s rebound was blocked by a teammate, but Jose Luis Gaya decided the game, angling a drive into Diego Lopez’s bottom-right corner.

Diego Reyes could’ve equalised for Espanyol, but the defender slid his shot over, leaving his side at risk of dropping to 10th. Los Che, on the other hand, move up to 11th.

Osasuna 2-1 Granada

Tony Adams’ Granada fell to the bottom of La Liga after they lost 2-1 to relegation rivals Osasuna.

Guillermo Ochoa had to push away a free kick on his line, before Kenan Kodro was unmarked in Granada’s box but still managed to blaze over unmarked.

However, Osasuna broke the deadlock via centre-back Steven Mondragon, who squeezed an effort through the Mexican’s gloves.

The Andalusians responded well, and Jeremie Boga’s saved one-on-one was followed by Adrian Ramos glancing in a header.

Kenan failed to keep another free shot down, but the Bosnian soon fired home the rebound from a saved header for all three points.

Ramos, meanwhile, slid wide from a tight angle and Sirigu was forced to tip over a long-range strike from the Colombian as Osasuna leapfrogged their opponents into 19th.
