Official: Valencia appoint Marcelino

Valencia have confirmed the appointment of former Sevilla and Villarreal Coach Marcelino Garcia Toral on a two-year contract.

The 51-year-old will replace Voro at the end of the season, with Los Che confirming an official presentation would be made after the end of the current campaign.

Marcelino’s agent Eugenio Botas had reportedly held talks with the struggling La Liga outfit last week, with Marca reporting he turned down job offers from Italian giants Inter Milan and AS Roma in favour of moving to the Mestalla.

Formerly a defender with Valencia’s city rivals Levante, the Coach was dismissed by Villarreal on the eve of the current campaign, replaced by Fran Escriba and reportedly was targeted by Valencia to replace the outgoing Pako Ayesteran last September, only for the club to be informed he had technically already managed one La Liga side that campaign.

Outgoing Las Palmas Coach Quique Setien and Celta’s Eduardo Berizzo were also reported to have been under consideration by Valencia owner Peter Lim.

A former Spanish youth international, Marcelino has managed eight different clubs across Spain including Sporting Gijon, Real Zaragoza and Sevilla.
