Levante return to La Liga

Levante have returned to La Liga after a one-year absence and with six Segunda matchdays still to play.

Sergio Postigo’s second-half goal secured Levante a 1-0 win against Real Oviedo – their first victory in three games – to leave them mathematically clear of third-placed Getafe.

“In order to go up so far in advance, you have to work hard and do very well,” Coach Juan Muniz said after promotion was sealed.

“Nothing is easy and less so in this division. I hope to remember this promotion for the rest of my life.”

President Quico Catalan added: “My grandfather is no longer with us and this promotion is for him.

“It’s been a very long year, but it’s ended in the best possible way.

“Now it’s time to celebrate with all the ‘levantinistas’ who have done their bit towards making this possible.”

The Valencians finished bottom of La Liga last season but embarked on a rigorous overhaul last summer, bringing in 14 new faces, culling 20 and appointing Juande Ramos’ former assistant Muniz as Coach.

Despite an inconsistent start to the campaign, they have lost just twice since December 10 and can be crowned champions if they beat Girona in a fortnight’s time.
