‘Celta want to raise roof’

Eduardo Berizzo insists Celta Vigo “want to raise the roof of our club” in the Europa League ahead of Thursday’s quarter-final first leg against Genk.

Celta have equalled their best-ever performance in European competition this season, last reaching the final eight some 16 years ago, but Berizzo made it clear his side harboured ambitions of going further than any of their predecessors.

“We’ve played in semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, but the magnitude, the significance, of this competition determines that it’s my most important game, not only mine but that of the whole team,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“The tie marks the roof of our club in European competition, and we want to raise it a bit more.

“The enthusiasm in our work over the past few months has sustained us and we come here feeling stimulated.

“We’re going to face a rival that play very good football, with a very technical midfield and a very forward-thinking attack.

“We must apply the pressure needed to prevent them from playing and then when we have the ball, we must attack with intelligence.

“The two teams have clear attacking threats, but hopefully we can impose ours more.

“We don’t feel like favourites, it’s a very difficult tie. They’re very tough opponents, so we’ll have to play very well in order to win. The key is to stay motivated.”
