Third ACL tear for Rossi

Celta Vigo have confirmed that striker Giuseppe Rossi ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Eibar.

Rossi went down heavily in the first half at Balaidos and was visibly in tears, prompting Celta’s chief medic Juan Jose Garcia Cota to warn after the game that the Fiorentina loanee was “scared” and had likely suffered a “serious” injury.

“Medical tests carried out on forward Giuseppe Rossi reveal that the Celta player has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury that occurred during the League game against Eibar,” read the medical report on the Galicians’ official website.

“The player will need to undergo surgery and his downtime will be no less than six months.

“The head of the club’s medical services, Juan Jose Garcia Cota, will intervene on a date to be set with the American specialist in charge of the player’s previous operations on his right knee.

“Celta send a message of encouragement and support to the player and hope that he makes a complete recovery. Get well soon, Rossi!”

The 30-year-old, who scored a hat-trick against Las Palmas last Monday, had suffered two ACL injuries in his rlght knee when he was a Villarreal player, forcing him to miss almost two years of football.

Goals from Kike Garcia and Pedro Leon left Celta nine points off Eibar, who moved up to sixth and into a Europa League spot.
