Monchi: My starting XI of signings

Outgoing Sevilla sporting director Monchi has unveiled his strongest starting line-up of signings he made over his spell at the club.

Speaking to Radio Marca, the 48-year-old was asked to comprise a team from the 151 signings he made across his 17-year tenure at Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan, although none of the signings selected were concluded in his final three years.

Indeed, nine of the eleven players were those who starred in the club’s successful 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns, with star midfielders Ivan Rakitic (captain of the 2014 Europa League winning side) and Ever Banega (Rakitic’s replacement, who left for Inter Milan in 2016) the only others to make the cut.

Spanish shot-stopper Andres Palop – signed from Valencia in 2005 – was selected, behind a back four of Dani Alves (Bahia, 2002), Javi Navarro (Elche, 2001), Julien Escude (Ajax, 2006) and Adriano (Coritibia, 2004).

In midfield, Rakitic and Banega were joined by Christian Poulsen (Schalke, 2006) and Renato (Santos, 2004), with Luis Fabiano (Porto, 2005) and Frederic Kanoute (Tottenham, 2005) leading the line.
