Varane set to miss a month – report

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is set to miss both legs of the Champions League quarter final, the Madrid derby and El Clasico through injury.

The French international pulled up with a hamstring injury in the early minutes of Sunday’s 3-0 win over Alaves and is set to miss the entire month of April, reports Marca.

Madrid confirmed the injury on their website and gave no indications of a timescale for returning, only that he would continue to be assessed.

The 23-year-old has started 19 league matches for Zinedine Zidane’s side this campaign and his injury is likely to see a prolonged run in the side for Nacho Fernandez, who is expected to partner captain Sergio Ramos in the heart of defence.

Varane will also miss La Liga clashes against Leganes, Sporting Gijon and Deportivo La Coruna but should return in time for the league run-in during May.
