Eldense suspend operations

Third-tier Eldense have withdrawn from all future games this season and called a betting investigation into their own players after a heavy defeat.

The side currently sit bottom of the Segunda B Group III – the North Eastern section of the regionalised Spanish third tier – and fell to a 12-0 loss to Barcelona B on Saturday, arousing suspicion that their players bet against their own team.

The result relegated the club and whilst it was initially seen as simply a freak result, the club have since released a statement confirming they will terminate a deal with an Italian investor group as well as suspending all sporting activity.

Marca and Mundo Deportivo report the club are also asking the police and La Liga to investigate the case following fears of match fixing.

“After today's urgent meeting between the Club Deportivo Eldense's board of directors… the contract with the Italian investor group has been rescinded and the first team's sporting activities have been provisionally suspended,” president David Aguilar told Radioestadio.

The 12-0 loss equalled a record for Spain's third division. Extremadura thrashed Portuense by the same score in 1993.

Televised images from the match showed some of Barcelona's team consoling an Eldense player in tears after the final whistle.

Barcelona B were without a number of high-profile stars including Marc Cucurella, Jordi Mboula and Carles Alena.
