Sevilla confirm Monchi departure

Sporting director Monchi has reached an agreement to leave Sevilla at the end of the season amid reports of a move to Roma.

The 48-year-old will leave his position at the club which he has held for 17 years and in which time the Andalucians have won nine titles including five Europa League crowns.

Reports in Gazetta Dello Sport this week indicated Monchi had met with Roma president James Pallotta in London and had agreed to join the Serie A club on a three-year deal.

"Sevilla FC and Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo 'Monchi', has reached an agreement for his departure as sporting director of the club, a decision approved by the club's administration council,” confirmed a Sevilla statement.

The former goalkeeper assumed his position in 2000 with the club freshly relegated to the second tier and mired in financial problems, and he is seen as the main driving force behind their resurrection.

A headline in Marca on Friday paid tribute by stating "Goodbye to the miracle man” and Monchi had previously admitted to wanting to live abroad in Rome or Paris.

A news conference will be held on Friday lunchtime by the club.
