Sevilla to appeal stadium ban

Sevilla have been punished with a partial stadium closure for chants aimed at Real Madrid and captain Sergio Ramos in a league fixture in January.

The club announced via their website it had been informed by the competition committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that the punishment had been imposed following the incidents in their 2-1 win at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Andalucians had already been punished for the same chants against the same player and club three days earlier in a Copa del Rey match, which ended 3-3 with Ramos scoring a penalty and celebrating in front of the home side’ Biris Norte Ultras by cupping his ears.

The Spain defender has had a love-hate relationship with the Europa League holders, whom he left in 2005, and unbelievably inadvertently headed home a late equaliser for Los Rojiblancos in their dramatic 2-1 win league triumph.

Ramos alleges he and his family ‘had been insulted from the first minute’ of both games, with chants and insults aimed directly at the 31-year-old.

Officials at the Seville-based club said they would also appeal against the latest ruling and "will turn to the Spanish government's sporting tribunal if necessary."

The N11 and N12 sectors of Sevilla’s Gol Norte stand will be closed again if the punishment stands.
