Torres set for new Atleti deal

Experienced striker Fernando Torres is set to sign a one-year contract extension at Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea frontman, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on Monday, has already met the requirements previously agreed with the club to trigger the extra year according to a report in Cadena Cope.

Torres was voted by fans as the club's Player of the Month for February and has subsequently recovered from a head injury scare sustained in a 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruna earlier this month.

"I'm very happy with Fernando," Atleti Coach Diego Simeone told AS on Thursday.

"You see him in training and he trains better than the youngsters. I've never given Torres any gifts. All that he has achieved here, he has earned it through his efforts and hard work. You have to take your hat off."

The former Spain international has hit seven goals in 31 appearances for Los Rojiblancos this campaign.
