Sevilla suffer Leicester nightmare

Sevilla crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday after a miserable 2-0 defeat to Leicester City, with Samir Nasri sent off and a missed penalty.

The big boys were out in force for Sevilla as they looked to protect a 2-1 lead against Leicester, who had won both of their games under new boss Craig Shakespeare.

The Andalusians had never reached the Champions League quarter-finals, although they did reach the last eight of the 1957-58 European Cup, when they were thrashed 10-2 on aggregate by Real Madrid.

Nasri got past Morgan in the Leicester penalty area in just the fourth minute, only for his shot to be denied by Kasper Schmeichel at the near post.

The Frenchman was then booked for kicking Wilfried Ndidi’s heels, although a stricter referee could’ve sent him off.

Nonetheless, a free kick was whipped towards Sergio Rico’s back post, where captain Wes Morgan shinned the ball home.

With that, the Foxes were going through on away goals, yet they hadn’t kept a clean sheet since January 2.

Sevilla almost responded through Wissam Ben Yedder, whose lashed strike flew just wide of Schmeichel’s goal, before the Dane was forced to tip a Gabriel Mercado effort over.

Stevan Jovetic and Mariano replaced Mercado and Pablo Sarabia – anonymous after his storming showing in the first leg – for the restart.

Sergio Escudero blasted a shot onto Schmeichel’s crossbar, but defender Nico Pareja couldn’t keep down the rebound, despite being faced with an open goal.

That miss was quickly accounted for as Marc Albrighton chested a deflection, before smashing a shot hard and low into Rico’s bottom-right corner.

Nasri was lucky to avoid a second yellow when he hauled down Danny Drinkwater from behind, but his chips soon ran out as the ref fell for Jamie Vardy’s overreaction from a clash of heads with the Manchester City loanee.

Sevilla were given a lifeline as Schmeichel slid through Vitolo in the penalty area, but the goalkeeper guessed correctly to his left to deny Steven N’Zonzi.

Jorge Sampaoli was subsequently sent to the stands for the second time in the 16-17 Champions League, having failed to keep his emotions in check.

The final 10 minutes saw the Premier League champions defend astutely and almost bag a third goal, however a massive save on the line from Rico pushed away Vardy’s header.

Islam Slimani then failed to round Rico from a breakaway, before Vardy blazed his finish over, with only the Spain shot-stopper to beat.

A corner fell to Joaquin Correa in stoppage time, but he fired his volley over.
