UEL draw: Celta to play Krasnodar

Celta Vigo will face Russian side Krasnodar in the last sixteen of the Europa League after Thursday night’s remarkable victory at Shakhtar Donestk.

Krasnodar currently sit fifth in the Russian Premier League and qualified for this stage of the competition after defeating Turkish giants Fenerbahce 2-1 on aggregate following on from their emergence from a tough Europa League group which contained Salzburg, Nice and Schalke.

The Russian side have one link to La Liga – Brazilian defender Naldo played for both Granada and Getafe – but their squad is largely home-based.

Celta were on the verge of elimination from the Europa League after a 1-0 home defeat to Shakhtar Donestk but a 90th minute Iago Aspas penalty forced the return leg into extra time, when Gustavo Cabral netted the winner.

The first leg will be played at the Celta’s Balaidos on Thursday March 9th, with the second hosted in Russia on March 16th.
