Lucho: Pointless last half-hour

Luis Enrique felt the final half-hour of Barcelona’s 6-0 victory over Alaves in La Liga on Saturday “was completely pointless for both teams”.

Barca scored all six of their goals at Mendizorroza by the 67th minute, with the remaining time on the clock marred by a serious ankle injury to Aleix Vidal, prompting Enrique to rue how the final stages panned out.

“In a footballing sense, I’m happy because of the result and the account we gave of ourselves, but I was frustrated by the injury of Aleix Vidal,” the Coach said after the game.

“Against a team that play deep, you have to master all the records, ball movement, depth, breadth and play with few touches, and our first two goals were a clear example.

“We controlled the entire game, with the team in the right positions and playing well, both when we had the ball and when we lost it because the pressure after we lost it is one of our hallmarks.

“We played to the height of what the game demanded. When your opponents sit back like this, you have to create space like we did.

“In the second half, they played with five defenders but pressed high, so there was more space. If that’s the case, we’re not going to stop and go backwards.

“We were especially effective, but there was nothing in the final half hour of the game. It was completely unnecessary for both teams.”
