Porto make Torres deal permanent

FC Porto have made their loan move for Atletico Madrid’s Oliver Torres permanent after the Portuguese giants exercised their purchasing option on the midfielder.

The 22-year-old initially starred in Porto’s midfield in the 2014-15 campaign during a season-long loan from Los Rojiblancos, which saw him shortlisted for the Golden Boy award.

He returned to Atleti the following season but only made 30 appearances under Diego Simeone and returned to Porto on another loan deal in 2016 in search of regular first-team football.

The Dragoes have now announced they have triggered a clause in the contract which allows them to sign Torres permanently for a fee of €20m.

The fee is the joint highest ever paid by the club on a transfer fee, and is the joint second highest in Portuguese football history, only behind the €22m paid by Benfica for Raul Jimenez.

Torres – who also spent a campaign on loan at Villarreal in 2013/14 – is one of three Spaniards at Estadio do Dragao, alongside former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas and central defender Ivan Marcano.
