Caceres set for Saints move

Former Barcelona and Sevilla defender Martin Caceres is set to join Southampton on a free transfer this week, according to reports.

The Uruguayan defender spent four seasons in Spain before joining Italian giants Juventus on a permanent basis in 2012, where he has been largely a back-up player since.

Caceres initially moved to Spain from hometown club Defensor Sporting in 2007 when he joined Villarreal, but he never made an appearance for the Yellow Submarine, instead being loaned to Recreativo de Huelva where he became a vital part of the side that retained their top-flight status.

That persuaded Barcelona to part with €16.5m for his signature the following year, but he made only 23 appearances for the Blaugrana before loan stints with Sevilla and Juve, clubs he eventually joined on a permanent basis.

The Saints have reportedly pipped AC Milan to the signature of Caceres and their eagerness to get the deal done stems from the sale of Jose Fonte and a long-term injury to Virgil van Dijk.
