Lucas: Absences no excuse

Lucas Vazquez claims it would be “disingenuous” to suggest that Real Madrid’s failure to beat Celta Vigo on Wednesday was due to absences.

The likes of Raphael Varane, Marcelo and Luka Modric missed Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Celta, which was not enough for Los Blancos to reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals, but Vazquez made it clear his side’s replacements were good enough to fill in.

“It’s now about focusing on the other two competitions,” the goalscorer said after the game.

“We tried everything, but they found two goals, not by luck, but with them, the game swung from one side to another and we couldn’t [find the winner].

“Our missing players? We’ve been showing that we’re responding to whoever comes out of the team. It would be disingenuous to say that we felt our absences.

“Looking ahead? Things don’t always work out the way you want them to, but we still have trophies to win.”
