Xabi Alonso to retire in May

Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso will retire at the end of the current season when his contract at the club expires, say reports.

Sport Bild report the 35-year-old will call it a day when his contract with the Bavarians runs out, bring an end to a successful, trophy-laiden career spanning seventeen seasons.

Alonso is said to have told Bayern officials of his intention to end his playing career after joining the German champions in 2014 under then-boss Pep Guardiola, helping them to back-to-back Bundesliga crowns.

He started his career at Real Sociedad where he made over 100 appearances, including a brief loan spell at Eibar, before going on to win European Championship titles with Liverpool and Real Madrid, and also winning 114 caps for Spain, scoring six goals and winning three consecutive major trophies.

Despite his age, he is still a regular at the Allianz Arena and is only three appearances shy of reaching triple-figure appearances for the club.
