Modric delight at ‘special’ award

Luka Modric has said that being named the Croatian player of the year for the fifth time ‘means a lot to him’ as he seeks to keep getting better.

The 31-year-old edged out compatriots Ivan Perisic (Inter), Matteo Kovacic (Real Madrid), Mario Mandzukic (Juventus) and Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona) to claim the award for a record fifth time.

"This prize means a lot to me, it's the fifth time I've received it and it's very special for me because it has a great tradition," Modric told the club's website.

"I want to thank those who voted for me. I have to keep working hard and improving every day. I want to thank those who have helped me to win this award."

Modric was instrumental in Madrid’s Champions League success and also won the European Supercup and Club World Cup trophies, whilst also playing a crucial part in the club’s 39-game unbeaten run which has taken them to the top of La Liga.
