Abelardo rues Sporting injuries

Abelardo Fernandez rued the absences of Moi Gomez and Nacho Cases after Sporting Gijon 1-0’s defeat to Las Palmas in La Liga on Saturday.

Speaking after Sporting slumbered to their 11th defeat in 14 League games, courtesy of Nabil El Zhar’s winner for Las Palmas, Abelardo claimed he had planned to switch to a 4-3-3 formation, only to lose two of his key men in the week.

“We were good, but we must now react [to this defeat],” the Coach said after the match.

“We know what we are, our budget, and we’ll fight to stay up.

“The situation is difficult because of our results, but the group have to react.

“Las Palmas are a team in great form. We brought annother forward on because the idea was to take advantage of their tiredness in the second half and find more space.

“It’s not a matter of playing with four or five at the back, [our performance] has nothing to do with it, but the injuries to Moi Gomez and Nacho Cases ruined my plans.”
