Marcelo has revealed his desire to see out the remainder of his career at Real Madrid. “Ten more years here? I’ll try!”
Marcelo is celebrating 10 years at Madrid after arriving from Fluminense in 2007, and the left-back is keen to retire at the Santiago Bernabeu, even if surpassing predecessor Roberto Carlos will be “impossible”.
“I didn’t expect to get to where I am, I was 18 and very scared because I felt a lot of pressure to represent my country [abroad]. Ten more years here? I’ll try,” he said after Los Blancos’ 5-0 win against Granada on Saturday.
“I only think about giving 100 percent in each training session and every game.
“Pepe, Cannavaro and Roberto Carlos? Without their support, I wouldn’t have gone this far.
“Surpassing Roberto Carlos is impossible. He’s the best and he’ll always be the best. Just being next to him is an honour and a prize for me.
“Fitness coach Pintus? It was him in preseason and during the winter break who prepared us so well physically. It’s thanks to him that we can compete well.
“This team are one of the best in recent years, but I’ve also played with other very good players here.
“I’ve played with other players and it’s difficult to compare them with other Madrid teams.
“We won La Decima… We’re good, but we’ve also played with other great players.”
