Barca, City target Weigl

Barcelona and Manchester City are set to go head-to-head in the race for highly-rated Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.

The 21-year-old has drawn comparisons to Barca’s Sergio Busquets in his deep-lying midfield role for Dortmund and AS report that both clubs have scouted the German for a while and both will attempt to work on a deal that could sign him next summer.

Luis Enrique’s side are not expected to do any major business in the January transfer window but are looking at long-term targets – players who fit their style of play and would be available at the right price.

The Blaugrana have reportedly target the defensive midfield role as an area they wish to strengthen and as Weigl is seven years younger than Busquets, he fits the perfect age bracket, while Sergi Roberto and Andre Gomes are thought to be unsuitable for the role.

Pep Guardiola’s City are monitoring the situation too for similar reasons and with Ilkay Gundogan’s injury concerns once again coming to prominence this season.

Weigl recently signed a new deal at Dortmund until 2021 but the report states that both clubs would be willing to test the German club’s resolve.
