‘Messi-Melon d’Or talk ridiculous!’

Luis Enrique claims it is “ridiculous” to judge Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi on awards like the “Melon d’Or”.

Messi lost out to Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2016 Ballon d’Or earlier in December, but Enrique insists the No 10 cannot be mentioned in the same breath as any other player, nor can his talent be quantified by any individual honour.

“Winning trophies is something that Barca fans have got used to,” the Coach told Barca TV.

“In a season, there are ups and downs, but that they’ve accepted the challenges posed to the players and the stimuli they transmit make us optimistic.

“Trophies have fallen our way because we’re the ones who play the best football and have the most clarity in our play. Ultimately, that has to give us a return.

“Messi can do whatever he wants, he’s different. It’s ridiculous to compare awards, Melon d’Ors with him … Messi can’t be compared to current or previous players.

“Now professional footballers are much better prepared and have access to more information than before.

“That a player is able to do what he does in this day and age… there won’t be another.”
