Real Madrid summer transfer ban lifted

Real Madrid will be able to sign players in the 2017 summer transfer window after having their FIFA-imposed transfer ban reduced on appeal.

FIFA had initially imposed a ban on Madrid registering players for both the winter and summer transfer windows of 2017, with the club unable to register any new signings until January 2018, due to breaking transfer regulations.

However, the club appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) who partially agreed with the club and reduced the ban to just the January 2017 window, with the club able to resume signing players that summer.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) has today informed Real Madrid CF the award for partially estimating the appeal made by the club against the resolution of FIFA that imposed a penalty of prohibition of registration of players during two periods of signings, reducing it to one, the window corresponding to January 2017,” read a statement from the club.

“This award highlights the unfairness of the penalty imposed by FIFA, although the club regrets that the CAS has not had enough courage to repeal it entirely.”
