‘We need a new defender’ – Sampaoli

Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli wants to add a centre back to his squad in addition to a new striker in the January transfer window.

The Europa League winners are enjoying a great season, having progressed into the last 16 of the Champions League and sitting third in La Liga heading into the winter break following Saturday’s 4-1 triumph over Malaga on Saturday, but are expected to see players come and go in January.

"It's true that we need to add one more centre-back due to injuries,” Sampaoli told the club’s official website.

"Since the start of the season, we've had the inconvenience of injuries and the recovery process has been slow but we have been able to adapt to the situations that we have faced.”

Defender Thimothee Kolodziejczak has expressed his wish to leave the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in January while injuries have limited Daniel Carrico to just four appearances this season, while Adil Rami now faces a suspension.

"I have his (Sampaoli's) letter but I haven't opened it yet. We will do so once the transfer window opens," Sevilla president Jose Castro told Cadena Ser.

"Our sporting director (Monchi) is always looking to see how he can improve the team and we will see what we can do. The important thing is that we are high up in the standings and we can continue to play as we are doing."
