Atleti line up River’s Gallardo?

River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo is being lined up by Atletico Madrid to replace Diego Simeone should he leave, according to reports.

Fox Sports Argentina report the 40-year-old – who has won six trophies with River since his appointment in 2014 – is currently the favoured option at Los Rojiblancos to step into his patriot Simeone's position when he does eventually leave the club.

Gallardo played in Europe for both Monaco and PSG inbetween playing spells at the Buenos Aires club and won 44 caps for Argentina, and could find himself in the Atleti dugout 'either at the end of the season or in 2018' according to the report.

Simeone recently had his contract at Los Colchoneros reduced by two years to 2018 and has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan.

Meanwhile, Atleti's league form has plummetted with four defeats in six and only two La Liga wins in seven.

Reports from England also suggest that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochetinno could return to La Liga to manage the Madrid-based club, with Sporting CP manager Jorge Jesus also muted.
