Aim to stay 4th – Trigueros

Villarreal midfielder Manuel Trigueros believes his side’s aim for the season is to maintain their position in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

El Submarino Amarillo finished fourth in last season’s standings but failed to make the group stages of Europe’s premier club competition after losing to Monaco in the qualifying rounds, but Monday night’s victory over Atletico Madrid reinstated Fran Esciba’s side into the top four.

"This has been our best game of the season,” Trigueros told Onda Cero radio station.

"To beat a team like Atletico Madrid is very difficult, and we all handed in a complete performance to win.

"We dominated the encounter and we were very solid defensively. I'm just very happy to have helped the team.

"We have returned to be fourth and we are delighted. It's difficult to defend this position, but we need to do that."

Villarreal’s final match before the Christmas break sees them travel to Sporting Gijon next Saturday.
