Barca’s Srna interest confirmed

Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca has confirmed Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing his club captain and full-back Darijo Srna.

The 34-year-old has been linked with a January move to the Blaugrana to act as temporary cover for Sergi Roberto with current right-back Aleix Vidal currently out of favour at the Camp Nou and reportedly on the verge of leaving the club.

"I know of the interest," Fonseca said ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Braga in Portugal.

"It is not for me to make this decision. We know the importance of Srna to our team and we also know of his importance to the club. He's spent many years with us, though, and I sincerely hope he doesn't go."

Rinat Akhmetov – owner of Shakhtar – said in September he would not stand in Srna's way if Barca registered an interest.

"If Darijo makes such a decision [to go], I will be on his side," Akhmetov stated.

"He deserves that the club should treat him generously.

"He is a great person and a great captain who gave his all for Shakhtar. We'll make sure that we are proud of our decision. It will be as Darijo wishes."
