Zidane: BVB deserved top spot

Zinedine Zidane admits Borussia Dortmund “deserved” to pip Real Madrid to first place in Champions League Group F.

Madrid took a 2-0 lead against Dortmund in Wednesday’s group-stage decider but – like their previous meeting in October – were ultimately pegged back by the Germans, who left the Spanish capital with a 2-2 draw and top spot in the pool.

“Mixed emotions. Things happen,” the Coach began in his Press conference after the game, UEFA.com reports.

“We missed a few chances to seal the game but we drew and came second in the group. We gave our all to come first, but didn’t do it. I’m very proud of the players, their hard work, the things they did.

“They’re a strong side who make life difficult and at the end of the day we needed to be a bit more on it, but it’s in the past now. The group is probably fair with us second and them first.

“We gave our all to come first. We didn’t achieve it. We wanted to do it but couldn’t. We won’t go over it again.

“We came second and we’ll now see who we get in the draw. What the players are doing isn’t easy. You have to congratulate them and now we need to rest.

“The second half saw us lose a bit of intensity but we had chances to score a third.

“When you see how the second half went you get a bit angry. We had the game in our hands but this is football.

“You need to carry on right to the end. We had chances to score a third, but that’s in the past now. We couldn’t do any more.

“I’ll analyse the game and we’ll see when things have calmed down a bit what we can take away.

“For any player it’s important to score and I’m very happy with Benzema. His goals, his work and the team’s work. He’s happy and we’re happy with him and the run goes on.

“There were a lot of chances to score the third goal. Instead, we got Dortmund back into the game. Dortmund deserved first place. They demonstrated how strong they are.

“It’s important to continue to make history and continue our good run. After, I’m happy for Benzema to make it to 50 goals in the competition.

“I’m happy with everyone’s work. We always go out looking to win but sometimes you cannot do that, it is difficult, the opponents make life difficult for you and we could not get the win. Football is like that.”
