Barca plan January Srna swoop

Barcelona are planning a move for Shakhtar Donetsk full-back Darijo Srna in the January transfer window, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The club are keen to bolster their defensive options, especially at right-back where Sergi Roberto has been the regular starter this campaign but his deputy Aleix Vidal has failed to break his way into Luis Enrique’s plans and could be moved on as early as January.

The Croatian’s contract in Ukraine expires in the summer but he is reportedly keen to leave the unstable country which has been his home for eight years, and it’s likely that he could be attained on a free transfer.

"If Darijo makes such a decision, I will be on his side," Shakhtar owner Rinat Akhmetov said in September, when rumours of a move first began.

"He deserves that the club should treat him generously. He is a great person and a great captain who gave his all for Shakhtar. We'll make sure that we are proud of our decision. It will be as Darijo wishes."

Capped 134 times for his native Croatia, Srna would add some needed experience to Barca’s right-back options especially in light of Dani Alves’ summer departure to Juventus.

AS and Mundo Deportivo both report a move could happen as early as January, with Valencia full-back Joao Cancelo seen as the long-term option for the club.
