Abelardo blasts Spanish press

Sporting Gijon boss Abelardo Fernandez swore and ranted at a journalist in a press conference, accusing the press of 'inventing stories to hurt us'.

The Asturian side are on a terrible run of form having picked up only two points from their last ten league matches having won two of their opening three matches, leading to rumours that the former Barcelona defender was fighting for his job, before a Marca journalist questioned his decision-making after home fans whistled when Moi Gomez was substituted during their side's 3-1 defeat at home to Real Sociedad on 20 November.

"You and your f**king newspaper Marca always look for the s**t, you are a disgrace," ranted the 46-year-old.

"You pretend to be a Sportinguista but you aren't, not like those in the stands and now you go and do tremendous damage, so I'm telling you to your face.

"You are like Van Gaal – always negative.

"Reinvening news to hurt us and give yourself a job."

Abelardo was then questioned later on El Partidazo about his comments, and whether or not he would retract them.

"I have nothing against Marca but the journalist in question has made up things before, and caught me in a bad moment," he explained.

Sporting lost 2-1 at home to Eibar in the first leg of their Copa Del Rey match on Tuesday.
