Bale surgery successful

Gareth Bale has successfully undergone ankle surgery in London, a week after sustaining the injury, Real Madrid have announced.

The Welsh forward suffered a peroneal tendon injury in his side's 2-1 win at Sporting CP on 22 November and is now expected to miss three months of action, but his surgery at King Edward VII Hospital is reported to have gone to plan.

"Our player Gareth Bale has successfully come through the operation he underwent today after suffering an injury to the peroneal tendons in his right ankle,” read a Madrid statement on Tuesday.

"The operation was carried out at London's King Edward VII Hospital by Dr James Calder and Real Madrid Sanitas' Dr Mikel Aramberri, under the supervision of Dr Jesus Olmo, head of Real Madrid's medical department.''

Some media reports speculate the 27-year-old aims to be back for the Champions League qualifiers in February and is expected to be back in action for Wales against the Republic of Ireland in March.
