Bale surgery – long lay-off feared

Real Madrid have confirmed Gareth Bale requires surgery on an ankle injury sustained against Sporting CP and could miss up to four months.

The club released a statement on Thursday morning to confirm the Welsh forward would undergo the surgery in London on 29 November after recommendation by specialist doctors.

Tests on Wednesday showed the 27-year-old had suffered a tendon injury in his right ankle and the early assessment had been a minimum of three weeks on the sidelines, but that has now been increased to at least two months – although it could be double that.

The Welsh winger will definitely miss the 3 December clash with El Clasico and the Club World Cup in December, although Real Madrid will be optimistic he could return as early as mid-January, when they face a trip to Sevilla followed by matches against Malaga and Real Sociedad.
