Sevilla crumble in Juve comeback

Sevilla must now avoid defeat to Lyon in a fortnight as Juventus came back from behind to secure a 3-1 win and seal their Champions League last-16 place.

Sevilla took the lead with their first chance of the game as a corner wasn’t cleared effectively, from which Nicolas Pareja’s sensational volley from the edge of the box zipped through a sea of legs into the near-bottom corner.

Sergio Escudero then blasted a scorching strike just over the bar, while Juan Cuadrado stung Sergio Rico’s gloves at the near post with a powerful cross-shot.

Mario Mandzukic failed to make the most of a promising counterattack, curling well wide, but Sami Khedira’s first-time strike skimmed the near top corner.

There was a turning point on 37 minutes, however, when Franco Vazquez foolishly received his second yellow card, leaving Sevilla down to 10 men.

Juve were then awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time, when Leonardo Bonucci appeared to be pulled down by Gabriel Mercado, although Sevilla and Juve players alike seemed stunned by the decision.

Nonetheless, Claudio Marchisio stepped up and converted the penalty. It was the first goal conceded by Sevilla in the 2016-17 Champions League after five clean sheets.

The half-time whistle was met with loud jeers and a furious Jorge Sampaoli, forcing referee Mark Clattenburg to require a police escort when leaving the pitch.

Sampaoli’s angry protests continued at every decision, and the Coach was eventually sent to the Sanchez Pizjuan stands.

The Andalusians remained competitive, even if Rico did get down to fingertip away a Miralem Pjanic daisy-cutter from distance.

However, Sevilla’s resistance was eventually broken with just six minutes left on the clock as the ball was knocked down to the edge of their D, where an on-rushing Bonucci hit a left-foot missile into the far-bottom corner.

Sevilla weren’t going down without a fight and spent the last few minutes pouring forward yet were left open on the counter, and with practically the last kick, ex-Atletico Madrid man Mario Mandzukic wrapped up the victory for Juve via a snooker shot.

The result leaves Sevilla with it all to do against Lyon on December 7 as the French side’s 1-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb means just a point separates themselves and Los Nervionenses going into Group H’s final matchday.
