Lopetegui revels in Spain comeback

Julen Lopetegui revelled in Spain’s comeback against England but backed Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions gig full-time.

Goals from Iago Falque and Isco salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw for Spain at Wembley, Adam Lallana’s penalty and a Jamie Vardy header having given England the lead, leaving Lopetegui delighted with his side’s “character” but also impressed by caretaker Southgate’s credentials for the Three Lions job.

“The mentality of the team was very good and I think we were the better team by the end of the match,” the Coach said after the game.

“We showed character, ambition and personality to turn the game around. The players were at a good level.

“I think the England Coach is doing well and building a very strong and competitive team.

“England did better than us at the start, with more intensity, but we were able to overcome them in the end.

“The game had intensity. It was a high-level match, in which both sets of players tried to give it their all.

“I welcome the debuts of Iago Aspas and Ander Herrera. They played with intensity and took their chances.”
