Vitolo: Missing Euros upset me

Vitolo has admitted that missing the cut for the Spanish squad in the European Championships earlier this year upset him at the time.

The Sevilla midfielder won his first international cap in March 2015 under Vicente Del Bosque and began to form a regular part of the international squad, but was not selected as part of the panel for France in the summer.

“This call-up is special to me,” the 27-year-old said ahead of his country's clash with England on Tuesday.

“It’s the chance to play there against a team like England. Wembley’s emblematic: not just for English football, but for football itself.

“I’ll always be grateful to Del Bosque for calling me up, but I really wanted to go to France.

“It didn’t hurt, well, it did upset me at the time. But I can’t hold anything against Del Bosque because he gave me my debut and competition for places was high. But I’d have loved to go to France.

“Then Lopetegui came in, I’m playing regularly and I have a lot of confidence with him.”

Vitolo has now won eight caps for Spain, scoring three times, including Saturday's World Cup qualifying win over Macedonia.
